Background on the Veterans’ Honor Roll Park Fund:
In September 2011, a group of a dozen citizens decided to create an honor roll for our area honoring those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. This is a tribute to all the servicemen and women from our area who have served their country in times of war and peace, active and reserve.
Veterans’ Honor Roll Park Fund Mission Statement: To erect an honor roll as a lasting tribute to the veterans of Albany, Bethel, Grafton, Mason, and Riley who honorably served our country.
We are looking for funds to complete our honor roll design that we have been working on since September 2011.
We are a 501(c)19 tax deductible veterans organization.
The honor roll will consist of two 25' walls starting at a height of 4' and rising to 7'. The center obelisk, which will honor all veterans, will be 8'. The honor roll will have etched all the names of those who have served from our area and will begin with the American Revolution conflict up to present-day conflicts. We currently have over 1300 names for our honor roll. The area will be completely landscaped. Flowering crabtrees will outline the property and there will be six park benches honoring area veterans and purchased by various families of those veterans. There will also be three backless benches surrounding our American flag and those benches will also honor a family's veteran or veterans. The five flags of the different services will be placed behind the two honor roll walls and they will stand at a height of 25'. Along the back of the property will be a hedgerow. The front of the lot is greeted by our Civil War Monument. The lot will also be surrounded by a wrought iron fence.
Over the years the group has gathered the names, acquired the lot, and created a design that we feel will honor all those who have served from the above towns. We have put in over 1,000 hours of time and over $60,000 of in-kind donations. To date, the lot has been landscaped, six flowering crab trees have been planted; water and electricity have been installed to the site. Two 25' base foundations have been set for the walls of the honor roll and the base foundation for the center obelisk. The 30' American flag pole and flag have been installed at the center of the lot and a four-brick high ring surrounds the flag with three lights inside the ring to light the flag 24 hours a day. There will also be lights installed at ground level which will illuminate the honor roll walls.
Your support means the world to us and to all those families whose servicemen and women will be placed on this wall. They will hold a place of honor for our area for eternity. This honor roll is something that we have never had and it is the highest honor to be able to honor our veterans. Your donation means that after 6 1/2 years we will be able to complete this project and dedicate it to all those who have served their country.
