The Scientists have spoken. Now the writers and artists speak in the new anthology A Dangerous New World: Maine Voices on the Climate Crisis. Richard Blanco and ten Maine poets read their contributions to the book at Gould Academy on February 20 from 6:30 to 7:30 in Bingham Auditorium. The program will also include local voices presenting their Actions in response to the growing climate crisis.
A reception and book signing follow in The Marlon Family IDEAS Center. The event is part of the Richard Blanco Writers Series at Gould and is free and open to the public.
?Maine encompasses all the ecosystems from ? seafloor to alpine peak ? that are being scoured by the corrosive force of climate change,? Bill McKibben said of the collection. ?And this book is a reminder that people who love these places and communities will not surrender them easily.? We see changes along the coast through the eyes of lobstermen and clammers, changes in the woods through the eyes of forest walkers and birders, images of natural beauty and its devastation through the work of poets, painters, photographers, installation artists, and sculptors.
Each year, The Richard Blanco Visiting Writers Program and Retreat?a collaboration between Richard Blanco and Gould Academy?celebrates living writers and builds appreciation for contemporary work by bringing writers to campus. In 2013, Blanco served as the fifth inaugural poet of the United States, performing ?One Today,? an original poem he wrote for the occasion, becoming the youngest, first Latino, immigrant, and openly gay writer to hold the honor.
