White Mountain National Forest information
Bethel, Maine is located on the northeastern edge of the White Mountain National Forest (much of which lies in New Hampshire) - the quiet side of the White Mountains. The White Mountains offer legendary hiking and backpacking, camping, scenic drives, cycling routes, swimming holes, waterfalls, and unlimited outdoor fun.
The areas nearest to Bethel are Crocker Pond and Evans Notch, each about a 15-20 minute drive. The eastern side of Mt. Washington and the Presidentials, known as Pinkham Notch, is about at 45-minute drive.
The nearest ranger station is the Androscoggin Ranger District office and visitor center, located 5 miles south of the town of Gorham, NH on NH Route 16. The visitor center has regional information, many interpretive displays, and a retail area with maps, books, recreation passes and other items for sale.
