    • About

Come join us at The Gem (in the old Casablanca Cinema) for a fun night out or family entertainment! We are open Friday thru Monday every week showing First Run movies!

Thank you! With the wide-spread support of the community we raised $75,000 in December 2015 and have officially re-opened. We are open Friday through Monday every week showing First Run movies. Give us a call at 207 824 8248 for movie showtimes.

We envision The Gem as a community hub where families go for entertainment and individuals go to engage with the art community. Local community will be built through the shared experience of contemporary cinema. Our mission is to offer affordable tickets and diverse programming to make the theater accessible to all ages and incomes. The Gem will provide the Bethel area with a fun night out! Ten percent of yearly profits will support local arts initiatives.

Instructor: Bruce Guernsey Date & Time: Saturday, June 24 | 10:30 AM to 2:30 PM Location: The Gem, Bethel Level: Open Maximum Attendees: 12 Fee: Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance (MWPA) Member $45 | Nonmember $100 Because the poet dictates line breaks—rather than the conventions of grammar as in prose—the poem has traditionally occupied a unique space on the page, one that can bewilder some readers. This workshop will explore the “when” and “why” of breaking a line. To do so, participants will read examples of good and less-than-good line breaks from modern and contemporary poems. Through these examples, the class will explore the art of the line break, including the central question of “What is a line versus a sentence?,” the possible over-reliance on the sentence in much of contemporary poetry, and the overuse of the verb “to be.” Participants will have the opportunity to examine and revise the line breaks in their own work. + BRING Please bring 13 copies of one poem, either your own or one that you admire, to the workshop. Poems may be up to one-page. Space is limited to 12 participants, pre-registration required.  Register Here: http://mainewriters.org/the-line-vs-the-sentence/ ...read more
